Virtual machines in Fusion 5 show a black screen when started or resumed after upgrading to Mac OS X 10.7.5 (2036012)

  • 56 Ratings

  • After upgrading to Mac OS X 10.7.5 (Lion), the virtual machines in VMware Fusion 5 show a black screen when powered on or resumed.
  • This issue occurs in Mac Pro 1,1 with an NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphics card.

This issue has been resolved in VMware Fusion 5.0.2. Please upgrade your VMware Fusion installation to version 5.0.2 to resolve the issue.

You can download the latest version of VMware Fusion from the VMware Download Center. For more information, see Downloading and installing VMware Fusion (2014097).

To work around this issue, modify the .vmx file (the virtual machine's configuration file):
  1. Open the .vmx file in a text editor. For more information, see Editing the .vmx file for your VMware Fusion virtual machine (1014782).
  2. Add this line to the file: = "TRUE"

  3. Save and close the file.
Note: This workaround may cause slow graphics performance in the virtual machine.

This article only applies to Mac OS X 10.7.5 (Lion)
If you are using Mac OS X 10.8.2 (Mountain Lion), you might notice the virtual machine failing while using 3D applications. This occurs only while using VMware Fusion 5.0.2
