Unix or Linux data collection fails with unknown key error (1005556)

Symptoms

  • When trying to collect data on Unix or Linux servers the job fails
  • The following error is generated:

    Unknown key or bad root login

Resolution

To ensure you can perform Unix or Linux data collection:

  1. Right-click on the affected server in the Navigation pane. Click Utilities > Unix Terminal.
  2. Verify that you can log in using the root account.
  3. If logging in is successful, verify that the SSH key path is correctly configured in PuTTY:
    1. Close the PuTTY window launched by Capacity Planner.
    2. Open %ProgramFiles%\VMware\VMware Capacity Planner\3rdparty .
    3. Double-click putty.exe .
    4. Click Default Settings and click Auth.
    5. Load the correct path to the SSH key.
    6. Click Default Settings and click Save.
