VDI Machines fails to power on with error:Failed to lock the file,Conflict between buffered and buffered open,Cannot open .vmx file when cloning VM: Device or resource busy (2151795)

Symptoms

With vCenter 6.5 and Horizon 7.X setup, you observe below symptoms:

  • Replica of master template fails to clone, you see error similar to: 

    “Cannot open .vmx file when cloning VM: Device or resource busy"

  • Host gets into non responsive mode.
  • VDI nodes fails to power on with below error messages:

    Cannot open the disk'/vmfs/volumes/ee739d8c-dd8caa3e/VM-19/VM-19.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on.
    Failed to lock the file File is being locked by a consumer on host  with exclusive lock.


  • In the /var/log/vmkernel.log, you see entries similar to:

    WARNING: NFSLock: 2209: File is being
    locked by a consumer on host <ESXi-hostname> with exclusive lock.
    NFSLock: 2965: failed to get lock on file
    <VMname>-checkpoint-sesparse.vmdk 0x43063e2073c0 on : Busy


  • In the /var/log/hostd.log, you see entries similar to:

    verbose hostd[118C2B70] [Originator@6876 sub=PropertyProvider opID=77bb632d-47-85cc user=vpxuser:vpxuser] RecordOp ASSIGN: info, haTask--vim.CbrcManager.queryDigestInfo-138025995. Applied change to temp map.
    info hostd[118C2B70] [Originator@6876 sub=DiskLib opID=77bb632d-47-85cc user=vpxuser:vpxuser] DISKLIB-CHAINESX : ChainESXCloseSubChain: failed to unlink '/vmfs/devices/deltadisks/257d23d-pr-client002-checkpoint-sesparse.vmdk' : error 16
    verbose hostd[118C2B70] [Originator@6876 sub=PropertyProvider opID=77bb632d-47-85cc user=vpxuser:vpxuser] RecordOp ASSIGN: info, haTask--vim.CbrcManager.queryDigestInfo-138025995. Applied change to temp map.


Resolution

To workaround to the issue, Reboot the ESXi host and power on the desktops. Deleting the VDI instance and recreating it also helped to resolve the issue.
