Installing VMware Fusion triggers System Extension Blocked notification on Mac OS 10.13 High Sierra (2151770)

Symptoms

  • When installing VMware Fusion on Mac OS 10.13 High Sierra, you see error similar to:

    Message,System Extension Blocked

  • A program tried to load new system extension(s) signed by VMware, Inc.. If you want to enable these extensions, open Security & Privacy System Preferences.

Purpose

To allow VMware Fusion as a trusted install on Mac OS 10.13 High  Sierra.

Cause

This issue occurs due to Kernel Extensions (kext) not signed by Apple or no longer automatically installed by default with Mac OS 10.13 High Sierra. As a security measure, Mac OS 10.13 High Sierra now asks the users to allow the installation of third-party kext.

Resolution

To resolve the issue:

  1. Open the VMware Fusion .dmg file to start install.
  2. Once you agree to the License agreement, you see this message:

    System Extension Blocked
    A program tried to load new system extension(s) signed by "VMware, Inc.".If you want to enable these extensions, open Security & Privacy System Preferences.


  3. Click Ok.
  4. Navigate to System Preferences > Security & Privacy on the host Mac OS 10.13. 
  5. Under the General tab towards the bottom of the window, you see error similar to:

    “System software from vendor “VMware, Inc.” was blocked from loading.” with option to click on “Allow”.

  6. Click Allow.
Note: You need Admin Privileges to allow the application.

Impact/Risks

If the Security & Privacy System Preferences is not changed to allow the  application from getting installed, while the Mac OS can allow one to create a Virtual Machine the Launch can trigger an 
error:
“Cannot find a valid peer process to connect to”
