Unable to consolidate virtual machine snapshots due to file lock by VDP appliance (2151402)

  • 0 Ratings

Symptoms

  • You are unable to consolidate VM snapshot due to file lock.
  • Backup operation on the VDP appliance fails or is interrupted.

Cause

During a backup operation, VDP creates a snapshot of the virtual machine and mounts the base disk to the VDP appliance to copy the data. When the backup is completed, the disks are mounted back to the virtual machine and the snapshot is deleted.

This issue occurs if the backup operation fails or is interrupted. The virtual machine .vmdk files remain mounted to the VDP appliance

Resolution

To resolve this issue, remove the virtual machine disks from VDP appliance.

  1. Right-click the VDP appliance virtual machine.

  2. Click Edit Settings.

  3. Select the Hard Disk(s) which belong to another virtual machine.

  4. Click Remove

  5. Select Remove from virtual machine.

  6. Click OK.

Note: Do NOT select Delete files from datastore.

  7. Consolidate the snapshot on the VM. For more information, see How to consolidate snapshots in vSphere 5.x/6.x.
