Virtual machines show their blueprint component to be unassigned after upgrade or migration from vRealize Automation 6.2.x to 7.3 (2150759)

  • 0 Ratings

Symptoms

  • The machines affected were created in vRealize Automation 6.2.x.
  • The Item Details view of the virtual machine shows that the Component field has a value of Unassigned.
  • The upgrade or migration process reports success but the logs contain errors similar to:

Exception thrown while upgrading machine blueprint. [ID : c5006949-0df0-4e6d-9dca-577791522966] [Name : MyWindowsBlueprint]
         Value cannot be null.
         Parameter name: g

  • Log files that report the issue for Upgrade will be located on the primary Web node.

    • If doing an in-place Upgrade, the log location and name depends on the upgrade method used:

      • When using the IaaS Installer: <vRA_installation_folder>\InstallLogs-<timestamp>\vCACSuiteInstaller.log
      • When using the iaas upgrade_from_62x shell script: <vRA_installation_folder>\Management Agent\Logs\All.log

    • If doing a side-by-side Migration, the log file will be located on the primary Web node at C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\vCAC\InstallLogs-<DateofExection>\Migrate.log, under the section:

Resolution

If migrating from vRealize Automation 6.2.x to 7.3 :

Before starting the migration, copy, extract and install the fix KB2150759_patch-1889798.tar attached to this Knowledge Base article on the target vRealize Automation 7.3 primary virtual appliance.

  1. Copy the file KB2150759_patch-1889798.tar to the location  /var/opt/ folder of the primary vRealize Automation appliance.
  2. SSH to the appliance using root credentials, and navigate to the /var/opt/ folder.
  3. Extract the hot patch tar file by executing the command:

    tar xvf KB2150759_patch-1889798.tar

  4. Navigate to the extracted folder by running the command:

    cd patch-1889798

  5. Run the install script:

    ./install.sh

Migrate the source vRealize Automation 6.2.x environment to this patched vRealize Automation 7.3 environment. For more information, see the Migrating vRealize Automation to 7.3 section of the Installing and Upgrading vRealize Automation guide.

If upgrading from vRealize Automation 6.2.x to 7.3:

After upgrading the primary virtual appliance and before starting the upgrade of the IaaS machines or other secondary virtual appliances (if in a high availability configuration), copy, extract and install the fix KB2150759_patch-1889798.tar attached to this Knowledge Base article on the upgraded vRealize Automation 7.3 primary virtual appliance.

  1. Copy the file KB2150759_patch-1889798.tar to the location  /var/opt/ folder of the primary vRealize Automation appliance.
  2. SSH to the appliance using root credentials, and navigate to the /var/opt/ folder.
  3. Extract the hot patch tar file by running the command:

    tar xvf KB2150759_patch-1889798.tar

  4. Navigate to the extracted folder by running the command:

    cd patch-1889798

  5. Run the install script:

    ./install.sh

  6. Restart the vcac-server service on this primary VA node by running the command:

    service vcac-server restart
The script does not need to be run on any other virtual appliance in the vRealize Automation cluster.

Continue the regular upgrade process by upgrading the IaaS Machines. For more information, see the Upgrading vRealize Automation 6.2.5 to 7.3 section of the Installing and Upgrading vRealize Automation guide.
