vRealize Log Insight Agent for Linux auto-update depends on HOME environment variable (2150533)

  • 0 Ratings

Symptoms

  • The vRealize Log Insight Agent has been installed on a Linux server using the RPM or DEB package.

  • Automatic update of vRealize Log Insight Agent to a new version fails.

  • In the /var/log/loginsight-agent/liupdater_yyyy-mm-dd-hh_mm.log file, you see entries similar to:

    yyyy-mm-dd hh:mm:ss.nnnnnn 0xxxxxxxx <trace> UpdaterDaemon:197  | Trying to install the package
yyyy-mm-dd hh:mm:ss.nnnnnn 0xxxxxxxx <error> UpdaterDaemon:250  | Could not verify the signature of the package. Could not verify the signature of the package. gpg return 2.

Cause

vRealize Log Insight agent version 3.6 and higher are able to automatically upgrade themselves to subsequent releases, when made available by a connected vRealize Log Insight server cluster and enabled on the client.

The liupdaterd service verifies the integrity of the update package using gpg. This verification depends on the existence of the HOME environment variable, and ability to write to the cited path.

To verify the cause:

  1. Determine the presence of a HOME environment variable in the running process using the command:

    cat /proc/$(cat /var/run/liagent/liupdater.pid)/environ | tr "\000" "\n" | grep "^HOME="

  2. Determine whether the cited HOME path is writable by the owning user using the command:

    stat --format="%A (%a) by %U (%u): %n" /proc/$(cat /var/run/liagent/liupdater.pid) /root

Example, in which the path /root is writable by the user root(0) running the liupdaterd service:

    dr-xr-xr-x (555) by root (0): /proc/1477
    drwx------ (700) by root (0): /root

Resolution

This is a known issue affecting vRealize Log Insight 4.x.

Currently, there is no resolution.
