Postgres Does Not Start After Applying the Security Patch for vRealize Infrastructure Navigator (2150471)

The postgres service fails to start after applying the VMware vRealize Infrastructure Navigator patch to address CVE-2016-5195


The VMware vRealize Infrastructure Navigator patch to address CVE-2016-5195 changes the permissions of the /tmp directory causing the postgres service to fail to launch.


This issue has been resolved in the newest release of the vRealize Infrastructure Navigator security patch, available here.

  1. Download the tar file VIN-Security-Patch.tar.gz from here.
  2. Copy the tar file to /tmp on the vRealize Infrastructure Navigator VM using an SCP utility.
  3. Log in to the vRealize Infrastructure Navigator Virtual Machine as root.
  4. Change directories to /tmp.
  5. Run this command to untar the VIN-Security-Patch.tar.gz file:

    tar -xvf VIN-Security-Patch.tar.gz

  6. Run this command to provide read and execute permissions to the file

    chmod 555

  7. Execute


To manually resolve this issue, grant full permissions to the root user for the /tmp directory.

  1. Log in to the vRealize Infrastructure Navigator appliance as root via SSH or Console.
  2. Grant full permisions on /tmp to the root user:

    chmod 777 /tmp

  3. Reboot the vRealize Infrastructure Navigator appliance:

After vRealize Infrastructure Navigator completes its reboot, the postgres service will start successfully.
