VM provisioning operations may take a longer time to complete when using Intel SSD DC P3xxx NVMe as caching tier on vSAN 6.6 and vSAN 6.2 (vSphere 6.0 Update 3) (2149876)

  • 0 Ratings

Symptoms

  • Reduction in performance for VM provisioning operations may be observed while trying to perform operations with limited parallelism such as OVF deploy, full clones & storage vMotion operations.
  • This issue is not evident when using Intel P3xxx SSDs as caching tier in vSAN 6.5 or earlier releases.
  • This issue is not evident when using Intel® SATA SSD as caching tier in vSAN 6.6 or earlier releases.

Purpose

This article provides awareness of possible reduction in performance to customers using the Intel SSD P3xxx NVMe devices in caching tier when performing operations such as full clones, OVF deploy & storage vMotion.

Cause

  • Reduction in performance may be observed for workloads with limited parallelism such as full clones, storage vMotion and OVF deploy operations. This is caused due to interaction of Intel P3xxx in caching tier with VMware log compaction on vSAN 6.6 and vSAN 6.2 (vSphere 6.0 Update 3).
  • All other workloads and operations with Intel P3xxx in caching tier on vSAN 6.6 & vSAN 6.2 (vSphere 6.0 Update 3) will result in no performance reduction.  Infact, you are likely to see a performance improvement for other workloads due to the log compaction enhancement.

Resolution

  • For additional information on alternate Intel NVMe SSD options, contact Intel support
  • For other options, please contact VMware Support.

Additional Information

  • This issue is not evident when using P3xxx as capacity tier in vSAN 6.6 or earlier releases.
  • This issue is not evident when using Intel® Optane™ SSD P4800x as caching tier in vSAN 6.6 or earlier releases.
