Using vSAN Health Service on vCenter Server causes vpxd memory to grow (2149208)

Symptoms

When using vSAN Health service on vCenter Server 6.0, the memory usage for the VMware VirtualCenter Server (vpxd) keeps growing when the vSAN Health service is in use.

Cause

This issue occurs because vSAN Health service sessions remain open after use.

Resolution

This issue is resolved in vCenter Server 6.0 Update 2a, available at VMware Downloads. For more information, see VMware vCenter Server 6.0 Update 2a Release Notes.

To work around this issue if you do not want to upgrade, use one of these options:
  • Disable vSAN component completely 
  • Restart the vSAN component periodically
Disable vSAN Health service completely 

To disable vSAN Health service on vCenter Server for Windows:
  1. Open the Windows Services using services.msc.
  2. Locate and stop the VMware Virtual SAN Health service.
  3. Double-click VMware Virtual SAN Health service.
  4. On the General tab, change Start Type to Disabled.
  5. Click OK.
To disable vSAN Health service on vCenter Server Appliance:
  1. Log in to the vCenter Server Appliance using SSH.
  2. Activate Bash Shell.
  3. Run this command to stop vSAN Health service:
    # service vmware-vsan-health stop

  4. Run this command to diable vSAN Health Service:
    # chkconfig vmware-vsan-health off
Restart vSAN Health service Periodically

To restart the vSAN Health Service, run these commands:
  • service-control --stop vmware-vsan-health
  • service-control --start vmware-vsan-health
Note: Disabling the vSAN Health Service is not recommended if one or more vSAN clusters is managed by the vCenter Server.
