Cleanup job leaves events for one more day than specified retention days (2149052)

Cleanup job leaves events one more day than specified retention days.

This issue occurs in UTC+n(n>=1) time zone.

From vSphere 6.5 running on Microsoft SQL and Oracle, vCenter Server invokes the events cleanup job at 0:15AM local time. However UTC based date is still the previous day in such time zone. vCenter Server stores events with UTC based time stamp and calculates the retention period. Hence the period becomes one day longer than that specified in retention days.

Depending on the database vendor, the cleanup is invoked as follows:
  • Microsoft SQL: 0:15AM local time
  • Oracle: 0:15AM local time
  • Postgres: 0:15AM UTC
For example:

Set retention day as 1.

When the job is invoked at 2017-01-31 0:15 UTC+9, the retention period start date and time becomes 2017-01-29 0:00 UTC = 2017-01-29 9:00 UTC+9.

When you check retained data at 2017-01-31 9:00 UTC+9, you see that from 2017-01-29 9:00 UTC+9 to 2017-01-31 9:00 UTC+9, totally 3 days data.

To resolve this issue, Estimate the database size to allow this extra events to be stored.
