Automated upgrade of IaaS components using new Upgrade Shell Script fails in vRA 7.2 (2147926)

Symptoms

  • If a failure occurs when using the automated upgrade of IaaS portion during an upgrade to vRealize Automation 7.2, it reflects as succeeded but the upgrade have not completed properly.
  • After upgrading to vRealize Automation 7.2, the cluster tab in the appliance management page shows the IaaS components as the previous versions.
  • If manually updating the IaaS portion of vRealize Automation to 7.2, this is not an issue.

Purpose

This article provides workaround steps when Automated upgrade of IaaS components using new Upgrade Shell Script fails in vRealize Automation 7.2 .

Cause

This issue occurs when upgrade fails, but the Management Agent fails to properly report the failure.

Resolution

This is a known issue affecting VMware vRealize Automation 7.2.
 
Currently, there is no resolution.

To work around this issue, use one of the options:

  • Replace the IaaS Management Agents with updated versions:  

    Note: This does not work around the cause of the upgrade failure but will allow the failure to be reported accurately.  

    1. Make sure that the vRealize Automation Virtual Appliances are upgraded.
    2. Download the Management Agent installer, available at VMware Downloads.
    3. Roll back the IaaS servers and SQL database to a pre-upgrade state.
    4. Log in to each of the vRealize Automation IaaS machines and upgrade the Management Agent with the downloaded package.
    5. Restart the Management Agent service.
    6. Complete the IaaS upgrade procedure.

  • Manually upgrade the IaaS components:
      1. Make sure that the vRealize Automation Virtual Appliances are upgraded.
      2. Roll back the IaaS servers and SQL database to a pre-upgrade state.
      3. Download the IaaS installer (and .Net 4.5 installer where required) from the installation page: https://<FQDNofVRA>:5480/
      4. Log in to each of the vRealize Automation IaaS servers and manually run the installer (upgrade .Net 4.5 where required) in the order specified in the documentation.
