  • vSAN observer fails to generate HTML bundle with the option --generate-html-bundle.
  • You see the error similar to:

"Failed to generate HTML bundle: Gem::Package::TooLongFileName: Gem::Package::TooLongFileName"

  • The generated package is not usable.

Note: The preceding log excerpts are only examples. Date, time, and environmental variables may vary depending on your environment.

This issue occurs during the tar compression phase of an observer bundle collection. This is due to one of the following limitations of the TarWrite gem package for RVC:
  • The relative path of a file, including the file name itself, is greater than 256 characters.
  • The file name is greater than 100 characters.
  • The file prefix is greater than 155 characters.

This is a known issue affecting vSAN.
Currently, there is no resolution.

To work around this issue:
  1. Run the vSAN observer command with the --forever flag set to dump the raw files.
  2. Manually compress the raw files using a Third-party compression program. Such as 7zip, winrar, or tar, before uploading the files.
 For Example: ~/computers/vSAN --run-webserver --force --generate-html-bundle /tmp --interval 30 --forever /tmp
