VMware vSAN witness appliance may be using evaluation license key instead of embedded key (2145456)

In VMware vSAN (formerly known as VMware Virtual SAN) witness appliance, you might experience these symptoms:
  • The appliance is using evaluation license key instead of embedded license
  • The license key expired

This issue occurs if vSAN witness host is added to the vCenter using vSphere client instead of webclient.

In vSphere 6.0, VMware recommends to use only webclient for all the operations because many features/options are not available through vSphere client.

When we add the host using vSphere client, it does not fetch the embedded license key and will delete the embedded from host when we start using evaluation key.

To resolve this issue, ensure to replace the witness appliance on ROBO, two node, and stretched clusters using webclient.
