  • Resetting the VMware vCenter Single Sign-On administrator password on vCenter server 6.0 fails with the error: VmDirForceResetPassword failed (5).

Note: For information on resetting the SSO password, see Unlocking and resetting the VMware vCenter Single Sign-On administrator password (2034608)

  • You see this error message after using the Reset account password option.
  • You are using a Windows based Platform Service Controller.
  • You are logged in using a Domain Administrator, or any account other than a Windows Built-in Account.
  • Using the Windows Run As Administrator option also reports the same error.

This issue occurs because the vdcadmintool only supports authorizing Windows Built-in Accounts, such as Administrator.

This is a known issue affecting vCenter Server 6.0. Currently, there is no resolution.

To work around this issue:
  1. Log in to the system using the local administrator account.
  2. Run the vdcadmintool command again.
