Migrating ESG or DLR Control VM using vSphere Web Client fails (2144845)

  • Migrating vShield/NSX Edge Services Gateway or Distributed Logical Router Control VM fails
  • Unable to select Next in the Select Network step of the Migration Wizard
  • You see the message similar to:

Select a destination network for each network or network adapter

This issue occurs because the unused interfaces of the Edge Services Gateway (ESG) or the Distributed Logical Router (DLR) Control VM are set to an undefined network within the vCenter Server labeled none and the migration wizard is unable to validate the final destination networks.

This issue is resolved in VMware vCenter Server 6.5 with NSX for vSphere 6.3.0, available at VMware Downloads.

Note: This is an expected behavior when migrating the Edge Services Gateway or Distributed Logical Router (DLR) with VMware vSphere 6.0.x using the vSphere Web Client.

To resolve this issue when you manually migrate the ESG or DLR Control VM, use one of these options:
  • Use the VMware vSphere Client to migrate the Edge Services Gateway (ESG) or Distributed Logical Router (DLR) Control VM.
  • Use the PowerCLI command-let Move-VM.

    For Example:

    Connect-ViServer vCenter_Server_fqdn_or_ip
    Move-VM -VM vmname -Destination host_fqdn_or_ip

For more information, see the VMware vSphere PowerCLI User's Guide.
Note: This issue may occur with any vm with multiple nics in the NSX environment.
