USB devices on your local system disappear when you connect to a remote desktop with Horizon Client 3.5.x or earlier (2144334)

Details

If you use Horizon Client 3.5.x or earlier for Linux, Mac OS X, or Windows with USB auto-connection enabled, and you connect to a remote desktop for which USB redirection has been disabled with Smart Policies, USB devices attached to your client system disappear from the client system. On Windows, the error message "An error occurred connecting the USB device to your desktop" can also occur.

This problem does not occur if you use Horizon Client 4.0.

Solution

If you cannot upgrade to Horizon Client 4.0, you can perform one of the following workarounds:
  • Set the Exclude All Devicespolicy to true on the client side. For more information, see "Disabling USB Redirection" in the Setting Up Desktop and Application Pools for View document.
To connect to another remote desktop for which USB redirection is enabled, you would need to set the Exclude All Devices policy back to false.
  • Stop the VMware USB Arbitrator Service and VMware View USB services on the client side. For service names, see the Using Horizon Client document for your client.
To connect to another remote desktop for which USB redirection is enabled, you would need to restart these services.

Both workarounds require root privileges on a Linux client system.
