Purpose

This article explains the Cluster Health - Deduplication and compression configuration consistency check in the vSAN Health Service and provides details on why it might report an error.

Resolution

Q: What does the Cluster Health - Deduplication and compression configuration consistency check do?
A: This test checks whether the deduplication and compression configuration for each host and disk is consistent with the configuration of the cluster.

Q: What does it mean when it is in an error state?
A: For disk groups, it means that the deduplication and compression configuration does not match the setting on the cluster. In addition, some of the disk groups might not be able to match the setting of the cluster. For example, hybrid disk groups cannot support deduplication and compression. Use one of these methods to resolve the error condition:
  • For a hybrid disk group that is moved into a cluster with deduplication and compression enabled, VMware recommends that you manually remove that disk group from the host, or remove the host from the cluster.
  • If the issue mentioned above is resolved, the Convert on-disk format button is enabled, and you can click it to perform an on-disk format conversion.
If hosts have a deduplication and compression setting that differs from the cluster, the issue might be resolved automatically, since the cluster setting on the hosts is periodically refreshed. However, if the issue persists, then you can log in to vCenter Server and perform one of these tasks:

To enable vSAN deduplication setup on ESXi, run this command on the ESXi host command line:

$ esxcfg-advcfg /VSAN/DedupScope --set 2
Value of DedupScope is 2

To disable vSAN deduplication setup on ESXi, run this command on the ESXi host command line:

$ esxcfg-advcfg /VSAN/DedupScope --set 0
Value of DedupScope is 0
