Net Packet Heap issue in VMware ESXi 5.5.x and 6.0.x running an NSX for vSphere Edge (2133899)

Symptoms

  • Severe latency across the active NSX for vSphere 6.1.x Edge appliance
  • ESXi host hosting active edge goes to a non responding state, post which ESG latency and packet drops on compute virtual machines
  • In /var/log/vmkernel.log file on the ESXi host running the active Edge appliance, you see entries similar to:

    015-09-21T05:17:00.691Z cpu26:32794)WARNING: Heap: 3819: Could not allocate
    2048 bytes for dynamic heap NetPktHeapLow. Request returned Out of memory
    2015-09-21T05:17:40.224Z cpu38:32806)WARNING: Heap: 3819: Could not allocate
    2048 bytes for dynamic heap NetPktHeapLow. Request returned Out of memory

    Note: The preceding log excerpts are only examples. Date, time, and environmental variables may vary depending on your environment.

Cause

This issue occurs because the ESXi host that is running the primary ESG intermittently runs out of the memory pool for network packet buffers.

Resolution

This is known issue affecting VMware ESXi 5.5 Update 2 and ESXi 6.0.x.
