Data Import fails in VMware vRealize Operations Manager with OutOfMemory errors (2109545)

Symptoms

  • The Data Import process from VMware vRealize Operations 5.8 to vRealize Operations 6.x fails
  • In one or more of the migration logs you see entries similar to:
java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space

Note: The migration logs are available by clicking the Download Log Files button and extracting the resulting zip file.

Cause

This issue occurs due to insufficient memory being allocated for the migration process.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, increase the amount of memory allocated to the migration process:

To increase the amount of memory allocated to the migration process:
  1. Log in to the vRealize Operations Manager 6.x master node as the root user.
  2. Change to the /usr/lib/vmware-vcops/tools/migrationUpgrade/packages directory by running this command:
cd /usr/lib/vmware-vcops/tools/migrationUpgrade/packages

  1. Create a new directory by running this command:
mkdir modified_$(date +%F)

  1. Take a copy of the source-migrator.zip file by running this command:
cp source-migrator.zip modified_$(date +%F)
  1. Change to the  newly created directory by running this command:
cd modified_$(date +%F)
  1. Extract the contents of the source-migrator.zip file by running this command:
unzip source-migrator.zip
  1. Open the resources/source.properties file using a text editor.
  2. Find the line that begins with jvm_memory= and change -Xmx2560m to -Xmx5120m.
  3. Save and close the file.
  4. Rezip the source-migrator.zip file by running this command:
zip -u ../source-migrator.zip resources/source.properties

  1. Change to the /usr/lib/vmware-vcops/tools/migrationUpgrade/packages/ folder by running this command:
cd /usr/lib/vmware-vcops/tools/migrationUpgrade/packages/

  1. Remove the recently created directory by running this command:
rm -rf modified_$(date +%F)

  1. Restart the vRealize Operations Manager 5.8 vApp.
  2. Start the Data Import process again.
