Installing or restarting Mac OS X virtual machine in ESXi or VMware Workstation fails with the error: [msg.cpuid.darwinWithBT] Mac OS X is not supported with software virtualization (2108727)

Symptoms

  • Cannot install or restart Mac OS X virtual machine in ESXi or VMware Workstation
  • Installing or restarting Mac OS X virtual machine in ESXi or VMware Workstation fails
  • You see an error similar to:

    [msg.cpuid.darwinWithBT] Mac OS X is not supported with software virtualization. To run Mac OS X you need a host on which VMware Workstation supports hardware virtualization.

Cause

This issue occurs because Mac OS X can only be installed in a Mac machine.

Resolution

To work around this issue, enable hardware virtualization in the BIOS setup if the host supports hardware virtualizatin (VT-x / AMD-V).

Note: Mac OS X cannot be installed on the virtual platform when the host does not support hardware virtualization.

To resolve this issue:
  1. Enable hardware virtualization in BIOS setup. For more information, see Ensuring Virtualization Technology is enabled on your VMware host (1003944).
  2. Change the virtual CPU execute mode to hardware virtualization. For more information, see Changing the virtual machine monitor mode (1036775).

Note: Ensure your physical system is an Apple-labeled computer, so that you can install or run OS X 10.8, OS X 10.9, or OS X 10.10 in a virtual machine.
