Symptoms

  • ESXi host in a vSAN cluster reports a warning alarm:

    Host vendor provider registration
  • The same ESXi host is displaying as unknown in the vCenter Server Storage Provider tab.
  • In the /var/log/vsanvpd.log file in the ESXi host, you see entries similar to:

    <YYYY-MM-DD>T<TIME> Z vsanSoapServer: run:127:SSL Connection error 30: SSL_ERROR_SSL error:1408F119:SSL routines:SSL3_GET_RECORD:decryption failed or bad record mac

  • In the /var/log/vmware/vpx/sps/sps.log located in the vCenter Server Appliance, you see entries similar to:

    <YYYY-MM-DD>T<TIME> 117 [pool-6-thread-3] INFO  opId= org.apache.axis2.transport.http.HTTPSender - Unable to sendViaPost to url[https://mrfdesxd003.mgt.cox.net:8080/vasa/services/vasaService]
    org.apache.axis2.AxisFault: Received fatal alert: bad_record_mac


    OR

    <YYYY-MM-DD>T<TIME> 698 [pool-6-thread-4] INFO  opId= org.apache.axis2.transport.http.HTTPSender - Unable to sendViaPost to url[https://provesxd003.mgt.cox.net:8080/vasa/services/vasaService]
    org.apache.axis2.AxisFault: Connection reset


    Notes
    • In vCenter Server Appliance 6.x installations the log location is: /var/log/vmware/vmware-sps/sps.log.
    • The preceding log excerpts are only examples. Date, time, and environmental variables may vary depending on your environment.

Resolution

This is a known issue affecting VMware vSAN 5.5 and 6.x.

Note: There is no impact to running virtual machines. This is a host management agent issue only.

Currently, there is no resolution.

To work around this issue, restart the vsanvpd service on the ESXi hosts affected that are part of the vSAN cluster.
  1. Log in to the ESXi host through SSH as root.
  2. Run this command on the console:

    /etc/init.d/vsanvpd restart
