Symptoms

  • Virtual machines become unresponsive after snapshot operations (creation and consolidation).
  • vShield endpoint drivers like vnetflt, vsepflt are used within the virtual machine.
  • The virtual machines are running on ESXi 5.5.
  • Depending on the CPU count the virtual machine can still be pingable.
  • In the vmware.log file, located in the virtual machine directory, you see entries similar to:

    yyyy-mm-ddT17:06:22.229Z| vcpu-0| I120: SnapshotVMXConsolidateOnlineCB: Done with consolidate
    yyyy-mm-ddT17:06:22.971Z| vcpu-0| I120: HBACommon: First write on scsi0:0.fileName='/vmfs/volumes/53709790-4c584e6f-ff60-00215e118094/testvm/testvm.vmdk'

Cause

This issue occurs when the vShield driver within the virtual machine loses connectivity with the ESXi after a snapshot operation.

Resolution

For more information, see VMware ESXi 5.5, Patch Release ESXi550-201501001 (2099265).

Note: After the patch is applied to the ESXi 5.5 host, ensure to upgrade the VMware Tools in the virtual machines.

Alternatively, to work around this issue if you are unable to install the Patch Release, vMotion the virtual machine to another host. If vMotion is not possible, suspend and resume the virtual machine.
