Symptoms

  • The debug.log file of the syslog collector is growing without limit in vCenter Server 5.x.
  • The C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware Syslog Collector\logs\debug.log file continues to grow without rotation.

Resolution

This is a known issue affecting VMware Syslog Collector 5.x.
 
This issue is resolved in VMware vCenter Server 5.5 Update 3 available at VMware Downloads. For more information, see the VMware vCenter Server 5.5 Update 3 Release Notes

Currently, there is no resolution in vCenter Server 5.0 and 5.1.

To work around this issue:
  1. Stop the VMware Syslog Collector service. For more information, see Stopping, starting, or restarting VMware vCenter Server services (1003895).
  2. On the server running the VMware Syslog Collector service, navigate to the C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware Syslog Collector file and save a copy of the vmconfig-syslog.xml. file.
  3. Open the vmconfig-syslog.xml file in a text editor and modify  from:

    <debug> <level>1</level> </debug>

    to:
    <debug> <level>0</level> </debug>

  4. Start the VMware Syslog Collector service. For more information, see Stopping, starting, or restarting VMware vCenter Server services (1003895).
