Cannot create a virtual machine on a ESXi host when vCenter Server 5.5 is installed with Oracle 12c database (2079443)

Details

  • Attempts to create a virtual machine on a ESXi host when the vCenter Server is installed with Oracle 12c database fail with an error messages similar to:

    • The vSphere Client:

      An Internal error Occurred in vSphere client.
      Details:Object reference not set to an instance of an Object.
      Contact VMware support if necessary...

    • The vSphere Web Client:

      java.net.SocketException: Connection reset

  • The vpxd.log file located at C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter\Logs\ contains entries similar to:

: This issue occurs in these Oracle Client versions:

Oracle Client 11.2.0.3:
Between Oracle Client versions 11.2.0.3.10 and version 11.2.0.3.18

Oracle Client 12.1.0.1:
Between Oracle Client versions 12.1.0.1.0 and 12.1.0.1.11

Note:  This issue does not occur on 11.2.0.4 and 12.1.0.2.

 

Solution

To resolve this issue, upgrade the installed Oracle Client to one of the following versions as applicable:

  • Oracle Client 11.2.0.3 p16656151 (Patch 19) or later
  • Oracle Client 11.2.0.4
  • Oracle Client 12.1.0.1.12 or later
  • Oracle Client 12.1.0.2
