This article provides information on using Catbird version 6.0 in vSphere 5.5 environments. With Catbird v6.0, Catbird supports NetX based network packet inspection for the Catbird multi-functional sensor.

Catbird v6.0 is a multi-functional network based security solution specifically designed to protect virtualized infrastructures. Catbird has a two part architecture consisting of a central console called the Control Center and a multifunctional virtual machine appliance called the vMA that is deployed on every ESX hypervisor. Security operators can configure policies for multiple security controls including: IDS/IPS, Network Flow Monitoring, Vulnerability Scanning, SCAP configuration Checking, Network Access Control (NAC), and the vShield App firewall. The Control Center then pushes policies out to the vMA appliances and through the vShield APIs to control the vShield App firewall. In addition to the security controls, Catbird provides continuous monitoring of all security control policies and reports the compliance levels those policies provide against the major compliance frameworks including: PCI DSS, HIPAA. FISMA, COBIT, and DIACAP.
