VMware Tools cannot be installed on RHEL 7 due to missing ifconfig (2075519)

  • 54 Ratings

When you run /usr/bin/ during VMware Tools installation, the following message is displayed:
Setup is unable to find the "ifconfig" program on your machine. Please make sure it is installed. Do you want to specify the location of this program by hand?[yes]

If you type yes, you are continuously prompted to provide a valid path of the ifconfig program. If you type no, the installation process is unable to continue and is aborted.

The default installation type of RHEL 7 is a minimal install, which does not install the net-tools package. As a result, the ifconfig program is not available.

Before installing VMware Tools, run the following command to install the ifconfig program:
#sudo yum install net-tools
