Disks not claimed automatically when VMware Virtual SAN disk claim mode is set to Automatic (2074560)

  • 0 Ratings

When using VMware Virtual SAN with the disk claim mode set to Automatic, you may experience one or more of these symptoms:
  • Disks are not claimed automatically by Virtual SAN.
  • No disk group(s) are created with the disks.
  • The disks in use report 0 of X eligible (where X is the number of disks in the hosts participating in the cluster).

Some SAS based controllers allow multiple host access. By default, Virtual SAN does not automatically select and claim disks that are attached to a controller with the capability to share its storage with multiple hosts. This behavior is by design to prevent an accidental overwrite of data.

To claim the disks attached to a SAS controller with sharing capabilities, you must claim the disks manually:

To claim the disks manually:
  1. Open the vSphere Web Client.
  2. Click the Manage tab and click Settings.
  3. Under Virtual SAN, click Disk Management.
  4. Select the option Select all eligible disks.
  5. Select the disks you wish to include in Virtual SAN.
  6. Click OK.

Additional Information

For more information about claiming disks in Virtual SAN, see Managing Disk Groups in the VMware vSphere 5.5 Storage Guide.
