Storage Policy Based Management configuration maximums (2062751)

  • 2 Ratings

This article provides information on the tested scale limits for Storage Policy Based Management (SPBM), a vSphere feature designed to allow vSphere administrators to define standard storage profiles for provisioning a new virtual machine or VMDK.

For more information about SPBM, see vSphere Profile Driven Storage.

Note: These limits are as-tested limits, which means that the product may scale beyond these stated limits. However, this is the extent to which the product has been tested by VMware.

Summary of Scale Limit Tests
SummaryVC/vCD 5.1 Object CountVC/vCD 5.5 Object Count
Max # of VMDKs per VM4242
Max # of Storage Profiles per VC3232
Max # of Objects per Profile24,00032,000
Max # of Tags per Profile128128

In addition to scale limits, system load also affects performance. For this reason, some SPBM operations (such as object deletion) are performed asynchronously. For example, if you remove a large number of objects from a single SPBM profile and then immediately attempt the delete the profile, the operation fails.

This occurs because the cleanup of the underlying database happens asynchronously.  After a few minutes, the error goes away as the system catches up on the required data clean up on the back end.  Exact performance also varies depending on how vCenter Server is deployed and which database is being used.

VMware recommends you test all features in your own environment to determine actual capacity.
