  • 9 Ratings

Purpose

This article provides steps to enable support for Microsoft SQL Clustering Service (MSCS) for the VMware vCenter Server 5.5 and later database.

This is a new feature in vSphere 5.5 that allows you to use MSCS to back the vCenter Server database instance.

Resolution

To enable the Microsoft SQL Clustering Service functionality on your vCenter Server:
  1. Connect to vCenter Server and navigate to:

    • vCenter Server 5.5: C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter\
    • vCenter Server 6.0: C:\ProgramData\VMware\vCenterServer\cfg\vmware-vpx

  2. Create a backup of the current vpxd.cfg file.

    Note: Do not skip this step.

  3. Stop the VMware vCenter Server service. For more information, see Stopping, starting, or restarting vCenter services (1003895).
  4. Open the vpxd.cfg file in a text editor.
  5. Set the recoverForAllError parameter to true:

    <vpxd>
    <odbc>
    <recoverForAllError>true</recoverForAllError>
    </odbc>
    ...
    </vpxd>

    Note: Add the above entry if it is not present in vpxd.cfg file already.

  6. Save and close the vpxd.cfg file.
  7. Start the VMware vCenter Server service.
