VMware vCenter Update Manager Web Client Plug-in fails to work with custom SSL certificates (2054748)

  • If you are using Update Manager 5.1 Update 1 or if you are using vCenter Server 5.1 and Update Manager 5.1 Update 1 and have implemented custom SSL certificates, you see this error when you click the Update Manager tab:

    There was an error connecting to VMware vSphere Update Manager

  • In the vsphere_client_virgo.log  file, you see entries similar to:

    [13:07:07.756] INFO [INFO ] http-bio-9443-exec-2 Destroying singletons in 9: defining beans [context]; root of factory hierarchy
    [13:07:07.790] ERROR [ERROR] http-bio-9443-exec-2 c.vmware.vum.client.adapters.updatemanager.aspects.LoggingAspect Exception caught in class 'com.vmware.vum.client.adapters.updatemanager.UpdateManagerService', line 1 60 com.vmware.vim.vmomi.client.exception.SslException: com.vmware.vim.vmomi.core.exception.CertificateValidationException: Server certificate chain not verified

  • Reloading the Update Manager certificates does not resolve the issue.


 This issue is resolved in 5.1 Update 2 .For more information see VMware vSphere Update Manager 5.1 Update 2 Release Notes

 To work around this issue, perform one of these options:
  • Use Update Manager with vSphere Client.

  • Disable the Update Manager Web Client Plug-in:
    1. Log in to the vSphere Web Client with Single Sign On (SSO) Administrator privileges.
    2. Click Administration > Solutions > Plug-In Management.
    3. Right-click Update Manager Plug-in and click Disable.
