Collecting a subset of vCenter Server metrics in vRealize Operations Manager 5.7 (2049349)

Purpose

This article provides information on collecting a subset of vCenter Server metrics in vRealize Operations Manager 5.7 (formerly known as VMware vCenter Operations Manager).

Resolution

vRealize Operations Manager 5.7 (formerly known as VMware vCenter Operations Manager) includes the new Metrics Profile feature that allows a subset of metrics collected from vCenter Server to be chosen. In larger environments, collecting all metrics from one or more vCenter Severs may induce performance issues in vRealize Operations Manager. By limiting the metrics collected, larger environments can be supported without any performance impacts.

When registering a vCenter Server in the Admin UI, you can see a new field named Metrics Profile. By default, this option is set to Full Profile, which ensures that all metrics from all registered vCenter Servers are collected. You can change this setting to Balanced Profile, in which case only the most vital metrics from vCenter Server are collected. Changing this option to Balanced Profile ensures that larger environments experience the same high performance as smaller environments.

Impact/Risks

If the vSphere UI is the only interface used, you may not see any visible differences in vRealize Operations when using a Full Profile or Balanced Profile. All Badges, Views, and Reports continue to function in the same way. If you are using a Custom UI, some dashboards and widgets may not function properly if a non-collecting metric is used.

For a list of metrics that are retained when the Balanced Profile is chosen, see the Excel sheet attached to this article.

Additional Information

You can also add individual metrics to the Balanced Metric Profile.
