This article provides answers to frequently asked questions about the End of Availability and End of Support for vShield Zones.

What is VMware Announcing?

VMware has announced the End of Availability and End of Support for the vShield Zones product integrated in the VMware vSphere platform effective the next release of vSphere.

What is the End of Support policy for vShield Zones?

vShield Zones has been included as a part of certain vSphere editions (Essentials Plus and above). The original End of Support policy date for vShield Zones, in line with the Enterprise Application Support lifecycle policy, can be found here. However, VMware has extended support for vShield Zones that has been included in vSphere 5.1 through August 30, 2013. vSphere 5.1 is the last release to support vShield Zones.

When will support and subscription services for vShield Zones end?

VMware will continue to offer technical support for customers of vShield Zones with active VMware Support and Subscription Services (SnS) agreements through August 30, 2013. VMware will only deliver limited maintenance in the form of patches for security vulnerabilities, as deemed necessary by VMware, until August 30, 2013.

Why is VMware discontinuing vShield Zones?

The vShield Zones virtual firewall provides very basic segmentation and traffic filtering capabilities. Internally, vShield Zones uses the VMsafe API, which is deprecated. Further investment for feature development or support is not justified. VMware plans to continue to invest in vCloud Networking and Security, which covers the majority of use cases for vShield Zones.

What is the migration path for customers who currently use vShield Zones?

None. VMware does not offer a migration path for vShield Zones.

Will customers be able to use vShield Zones even after the End of Support date is passed?

Yes, the product can be used by customers past the End of Support date. However, VMware will not provide access to support services, patches, or maintenance releases after this date.
