A template to virtual machine conversion causes virtual machine to lose network connectivity when using vDS (2017926)

  • 2 Ratings

  • When using a vSphere Distributed switch (vDS), a template to virtual machine conversion causes the virtual machine to lose network connectivity.
  • A virtual machine does not get a port-id on a destination ESXi/ESX host.
  • The hostd.log file contains an error similar to:

NetworkProvider'] DVPort xxx on dvs uuid of dvSwitch not found NetworkProvider'

Note: For more information on log locations, see the ESX(i) section of Location of log files for VMware products(1021806).

  • If you try to connect the virtual network adapter in vSphere Client (Right-click the virtual machine and click Edit Settings), you may see the error:

    Invalid configuration for device '0'

This issue occurs if the port associated with the virtual machine is not released when the virtual machine is converted to a template.
Additionally, when a template is converts to a virtual machine and the virtual machine is registered on another host, the virtual machine does not get a port-id on the destination host.

This issue is resolved in vCenter Server 5.5. You can download the latest release from the VMware Download Center

To work around this issue in older releases, change the dvPortGroup settings to any other available dvPortGroup on that particular dvPortGroup and revert back to the original dvPortGroup.
