VMware vCloud Director Memory Used value is incorrect for Allocation Pool Org vDC (2006684)

  • 2 Ratings

  • The Memory Used value in the Allocation tab of an Org vDC properties pages shows a value that is higher than the memory used on the resource pool in vSphere.
  • Memory Used under the Organization vDC's Monitor section shows the same incorrect value.
  • The Org vDC has been configured to use Allocation Pool.

This is a known issue where the % guaranteed incorrectly affects the Memory Used value for the Organization vDC.

This issue is resolved in vCloud Director 5.1, available at VMware Downloads.

If you are unable to upgrade, you can workaround this issue by setting the % guaranteed to 100%. For more information, see Allocate Resources to an Organization in the vCloud Director Administrator's Guide.

This formula is used to determine the value displayed in vCloud Director:

memory reservation / (1024 * 1024) / over provisioning factor = memory used
  • memory reservation is the reservationUsed value in the vCenter mob viewer. The Resource Pool is named in vSphere based on the name of the Org vCD in vCloud Director. You can use this mob view breadcrumb to find the object:

    Content > rootFolder > childEntity > hostFolder > childEntity > ResourcePool > ResourcePool > runtime > memory > reservationUsed

  • over provisioning factor is the percentage of memory guaranteed as set in the Allocation Pool settings, identified in decimal format.

    For example:
    • 752877568 / (1024*1024) / 0.5 = 1436

This value would be 50% memory guaranteed in the Allocation Pool settings and would show up as 1.4GB used in vCloud Director.

    • 752877568 / (1024*1024) / 1 = 718

This value would be 100% memory guaranteed in the Allocation Pool settings and would show up as 0.7GB used in vCloud Director.
