vSphere 5.x does not support View Manager 4.x (2006216)

  • 3 Ratings

This article provides information about VMware vSphere 5.x support for VMware View Manager 4.x.

VMware vSphere 5.x and its associated products, such as vCenter Server 5, do not support VMware View Manager 4.x.
No version of VMware View Manager 4.x (including Composer 2.6 and earlier) is compatible with vSphere 5 or its associated products. See the VMware Product Interoperability Matrix for View compatibility with vCenter Server releases.

This lack of compatibility means:

  • vCenter Server 5 cannot be used to manage a ESX/ESXi cluster in which View Pools are deployed, even if the ESX/ESXi hosts are not ESXi 5.0.
  • Composer should not be installed on vCenter Server 5.0.

Using vSphere 5 with View Manager 4.x or Composer 2.6 or older can lead to issues such as an inability to recompose/refresh virtual machines and even unrecoverable damage to the Composer database, linked clones, persistent disks, and ADAM databases.

If you encounter problems when using vSphere 5 or an associated product with View Manager 4.x, your vCenter Server, View Composer, View Connection server databases may have to be restored from backup and your linked clone pools will have to be recreated.

Prior to upgrading your vSphere environment to vSphere 5.0. upgrade your View environment to View 5.0.  See the View 5.0 Release Notes for information on compatible versions of vSphere.
