VMware View desktop becomes unresponsive when playing video over the WAN if MMR is enabled (1039173)

  • 0 Ratings

In constrained network conditions, such as a WAN with a 400kbps downlink and 200ms round-trip latency, a desktop virtual machine enabled with Multimedia Redirection (MMR) becomes unresponsive when playing a video.

MMR is a Microsoft DirectShow filter that forwards multimedia data from specific codecs on View desktops directly through a TCP socket to the client system. The data is then decoded directly on the client system, where it is played. If client systems have insufficient resources to handle local multimedia decoding, it is best not to use MMR.

To enable or disable MMR, use a View Policy setting. By default, the MMR policy is set to Allow. To disable MMR, you must set the policy to Deny. You can set the policy at a global level, pool level, or individual desktop level.

For more information, see these sections in the VMware View Administration guide for your version of VMware View:

  • Configure Global Policy Settings
  • Configure Policies for Desktop Pools
  • Configure Policies for Desktop Users
