Primary partitions are converted to extended primary partitions in VMware vCenter Converter 4.1, 4.2, and 5.0 (1034749)

  • 7 Ratings

  • When you convert a virtual machine using vCenter Converter, active/primary disks are converted to independent VMDK disks
  • All volumes become extended logical drives when converted using vCenter Converter

This is an expected behavior.
This feature was introduced in vCenter Converter 4.x onward overcome an issue with earlier VMware Converter versions.
The MBR has a limit of 4 primary partitions. Earlier Converter versions used to create a separate virtual disk for each physical partition and Windows picked these as primary partitions. If there were more than 4 partitions, conversion used to fails. To overcome this issue, vCenter Converter 4.x creates extended partitions and does not split partitions into separate disks any more.
