This article provides the steps to enable SSH on an ESXi 4.1.x  host when hostd is unavailable.


To enable SSH on an ESXi 4.1.x host when hostd is unavailable:
Note: These steps require a local console or an out-of-band access to the ESXi server.
  1. At the DCUI of the ESXi host, press Alt + F1 and enter the root username and password to log in. For more information on logging into the ESXi host, see Using Tech Support Mode in ESXi 4.1 (1017910).

  2. Open the /etc/inetd.conf file using a text editor, for more information see Editing files on an ESX host using vi or nano (1020302).

  3. Remove the # (comment) symbol in these entries:

    #ssh      stream   tcp   nowait   root   /sbin/dropbearmulti   dropbear ++min=0,swap,group=shell -i -K60
    #ssh      stream   tcp6  nowait   root   /sbin/dropbearmulti   dropbear ++min=0,swap,group=shell -i -K60

  4. Run this command to restart the SSH daemon for the changes to take effect:

    /etc/init.d/TSM-SSH restart
