Installing VMware Tools in a Mac OS Guest (1032440)

This article details the procedure to install VMware Tools in a guest running Mac OS. For more information about VMware Tools, see Overview of VMware Tools for VMware Fusion (1022048).

Note: Mac OS guests are only supported in VMware Fusion virtual machines.


To install VMware Tools in a Mac OS Guest:

Note: You do not need a CD to install VMware Tools. The VMware Tools installer is embedded in the VMware Fusion application itself.
  1. Power on the virtual machine and log in.
  2. From the Apple menu, go to Virtual Machine > Install VMware Tools.
  3. Click Install when prompted.
  4. The VMware Tools volume mounts and opens automatically. Double-click Install VMware Tools.
  5. Click Continue to the first three prompts, accepting the installation process, initiating process, and agreeing to install VMware Tools on the boot volume.
  6. Click Install.
  7. Enter your administrator password to allow the installation.
  8. Click Continue Installation to allow the virtual machine to reboot after the installation finishes.
  9. Click Restart Now.

Additional Information

Running VMware Tools in Mac OS guests has these limitations:
  • SVGA only. No accelerated 2D or 3D graphics.
  • Drag-and-Drop / Copy-Paste
  • No support for Unity.
  • No multimonitor support in full screen.
  • No USB 3.0 support.
  • Mac OS X Server guests do not support sound.
