  • 52 Ratings

Symptoms

  • You cannot install VMware View Agent
  • Installing VMware View Agent fails
  • You see the error:

The system must be rebooted before installation can continue

  • Restarting the machine does not resolve this issue

Cause

This issue occurs if there are pending operations from previous installations.

Resolution

Note: This procedure modifies the Windows registry. Before making any registry modifications, ensure that you have a current and valid backup of the registry and the virtual machine. For more information on backing up and restoring the registry, see the Microsoft Knowledge Base article 136393.

The preceding link was correct as of September 15, 2015. If you find the link is broken, provide feedback and a VMware employee will update the link.

  1. Reboot the guest operating system to clear the pending operations.
  2. If the issue persists, try removing VMware Tools and reinstalling it, then proceed to the next step if this does not resolve the issue.
  3. Click Start > Run, type regedit, and click OK.
  4. Look for these registry keys:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\PendingFileRenameOperations

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\FileRenameOperations

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Session Manager\PendingFileRenameOperations

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Session Manager\FileRenameOperations

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\Session Manager\FileRenameOperations

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\Session Manager\PendingFileRenameOperations

  5. If there is a string in any of these keys, delete the string.
  6. Reinstall VMware View Agent again.
Note: If this does not resolve the issue, delete any strings in these keys as well:
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce\
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx\

After deleting the strings, reboot the virtual machine and attempt to install the View Agent.

Note: If the issue persists even after trying the steps in this article, file a Support Request with VMware Support and note this Knowledge Base article ID (1029288) in the problem description. For more information, see Filing a Support Request in My VMware (2006985).

Additional Information

If the steps in the Resolution section do not resolve the issue, check if any of these VMware View Services in the agent machine are in a state where they cannot be stopped:
  • VMware USB Arbitration Service
  • VMware View Agent
  • VMware View Composer Guest Agent Server
  • VMware Persona Management
If they cannot be stopped, disable the service, reboot the virtual machine, and install the View Agent using Run As Administrator, and verify whether the agent can be installed successfully.
