Virtualizing Internet Explorer 7 or 8 with ThinApp (1026674)

  • 22 Ratings

Purpose

This article explains how to virtualize Internet Explorer 7 or Internet Explorer 8 with ThinApp. Beginning with ThinApp 4.6, this is a different process from capturing Internet Explorer 6.

For more information about capturing Internet Explorer 6, see Virtualizing Internet Explorer 6 with ThinApp 4.6 (1026565).

Resolution

You cannot virtualize Internet Explorer 7 or Internet Explorer 8 in the way that you can virtualize Internet Explorer 6 in ThinApp 4.6 and later. ThinApp 4.6 introduced a special template only for Internet Explorer 6. Virtualize IE7 or IE8 without regard to the special way of virtualizing IE6 in ThinApp 4.6.

To capture Internet Explorer 7 or Internet Explorer 8

Note: The supported method of capturing the upgrade to a new version of Internet Explorer is to put the new Internet Explorer 7 or 8 installer on the desktop before the prescan and leave it there until after the postscan (see Additional Information section below). The alternative, unsupported way to capture an upgrade is to navigate to the Microsoft website during capture and upgrade from there.

Windows 7 comes with IE 8 pre-installed, so it is necessary to perform these steps on a Windows XP capture machine:

  1. Perform a prescan.
  2. Begin the Setup Capture.

Note: Do not select Internet Explorer on the Setup Capture application. This feature only works for capturing Internet Explorer 6. For more information on capturing Internet Explorer 6, see Virtualizing Internet Explorer 6 with ThinApp 4.6 (1026565).

  3. During the application installation phase of Setup Capture, capture the upgrade from Internet Explorer 6 to the version of Internet Explorer you are virtualizing (IE7 or IE8).
  4. Configure the browser by opening the newly installed native Internet Explorer.
  5. Postscan.
  6. Configure the project and package in the subsequent Setup Capture windows.
  7. When the Native Browser Redirection window appears in Setup Capture, you have the option of creating a ThinDirect.txt file. This file allows you to implement ThinDirect redirection of web pages from native Internet Explorer to the virtual Internet Explorer browser.

For more information on setting up redirection with a ThinDirect.txt file, see:
  8. Build.

Additional Information

Note: The supported method of capturing the upgrade to a new version of Internet Explorer is to put the new Internet Explorer installer on the desktop before the prescan and leave it there until after the postscan.

The new Internet Explorer version is simply installed over the current native Internet Explorer browser. Only one version of native Internet Explorer remains on the system.

If instead you download the latest version of Internet Explorer during the Installation phase of Setup Capture, the installer is included in the virtual package because it was downloaded after the prescan.
