Virtualizing Internet Explorer 6 with ThinApp 4.6 and later (1026565)

Purpose

This article describes how to virtualize Internet Explorer 6 with ThinApp. ThinApp 4.6 and later versions introduce a new way of packaging Internet Explorer 6, which uses a template to capture the Internet Explorer 6 files from your natively installed IE6 on your clean capture machine.

Prerequisites

Before virtualizing Internet Explorer 6 with ThinApp 4.6 and later, make sure your capture machine meets these requirements:

  • Running Windows 2000 or XP
    • If running XP, SP2 or SP3 must be installed.
  • Internet Explorer 6 installed.

As a best practice, install the latest service packs and updates for the Windows operating system before you start your capture. This ensures that Internet Explorer 6 has the latest security fixes from Microsoft.

Summary of steps

This is a summary of the steps to capture and virtualize Internet Explorer 6 (IE 6). For more information, see the Details section of this article.

  1. Prescan.
  2. Click the Internet Explorer button in the Install Application window.
  3. Select Include an entry point for a fully virtualized Internet Explorer, then click OK.
  4. During the installation phase, install plug-ins and / or customize native Internet Explorer 6.
  5. Postscan.
  6. If needed, set up redirection from the native Internet Explorer to the virtualized IE 6, For more information, see Using ThinApp ThinDirect to Set Up Redirection from the Native Internet Explorer to a Virtual Browser Such As Virtual Internet Explorer 6 (the virtualized IE 6) (1026566).
  7. If needed, create an MSI package for the virtualized IE 6.
  8. Save the project, and build the package.
  9. Deploy and register the package as you would any ThinApp package.

Details of steps to virtualize Internet Explorer 6 in ThinApp Setup Capture

  1. Do the prescan.

  2. After the prescan, in the Install Application window, click the Internet Explorer button.

    You can click the Internet Explorer button before or after you install plug-ins to Internet Explorer during the installation phase. Either way, the plug-ins that you install during the installation phase are captured as part of virtual Internet Explorer 6.

    After you click the Internet Explorer button, an Internet Explorer Entry Points window opens.

  3. Select Include an entry point for a fully virtualized Internet Explorer, then click OK.

  4. Return to the Install Application window. At this point, you can install plug-ins and / or customize Internet Explorer. To do this, open the native IE 6.

    If you already have a home page, proxy, bookmarks, or other preferences set in native IE 6 on the capture machine, those are included in the capture.

    Any plug-ins that were already installed in native IE 6 on the capture machine before the prescan are excluded from the capture. You need to install the plug-ins you want now, during the installation phase, so that they are picked up between the prescan and postscan.

    You can also customize IE 6 in any way that you want now. This is captured during the installation phase.

    As IE 6 changes with your installations and configurations during this phase, Setup Capture adds them to the project. For example, you get IE 6 with Java runtime embedded if you install the Java runtime plug-in in a command window during this phase.

  5. Do the postscan.

    Several standard Setup Capture windows appear. The Entry Points window is the next window after the postscan. If you virtualized Internet Explorer 6, this entry point is available and selected by default. The end result from this capture is a single virtualized IE 6 .exe.

  6. The Native Browser Redirection window appears. This window allows you to implement the ThinDirect feature that works with virtual Internet Explorer 6 or any other virtual browser. Your entries in this window create a browser redirection file called ThinDirect.txt for the project. The ThinDirect.txt file works in conjunction with the ThinDirect plug-in to native IE.

    You can virtualize Internet Explorer or another browser without implementing the redirection feature.

    These instructions skip the redirection window. For more information about setting up automatic redirection of web pages from native Internet Explorer to the browser you are virtualizing, see Using ThinApp ThinDirect to Set Up Redirection from the Native Internet Explorer to a Virtual Browser Such As Virtual Internet Explorer 6 (Virt IE6) (1026566).

    Virtualizing IE 6 without a redirection file means that the virtualized IE 6 is available in parallel with the native Internet Explorer. You can launch the virtualized IE 6 and open web pages.

    Continue with the other standard windows in Setup Capture.

  7. You can choose to create an MSI package for your virtual browser.This may provide you with the best means of deploying the package in your environment.

  8. Save the project, and build the package.

  9. Deploy and register the package as you would any ThinApp package.

    You can deploy the virtualized IE 6 to Windows 7, XP, or 2000. The virtualized IE 6 can run alongside any version of native Internet Explorer that the Windows version supports. For more information about supported deployment platforms for IE 6, see Support Policy for Internet Explorer virtualized with VMware ThinApp (2069870).
