Creating an Organization Virtual Data Center in VMware vCloud Director (1026320)

  • 8 Ratings

This article provides steps to create an Organization vDC (Org vDC).

An Org vDC is a container for the deployment of vApps. It is created using resources taken from a selected Provider vDC, and is a description of the way resources are allocated and used by a vCloud Director Organization when deploying their vApps. It is also a way of hiding Resource Creation Layer (RCL) Virtual Resources from vCloud Director end-users.
To create an Org vDC:
  1. From the Home view, click Allocate Resources to an Organization. This launches the Org vDC creation wizard.
  2. Select a Provider vDC from the lists of available Provider vDCs. The wizard displays the External Networks available to this Provider vDC.
  3. Select an Allocation Model:
    1. Choose the way resources are allocated from the Provider vDC.
    2. Choose the way resource can be used when deploying vApps in the vCloud Director Organization.

  4. Configure the Allocation Pool Model (for example, Reservation Pool, or Pay-As-You-Go):
    1. Set the % Guarantee of Resources to the vDC or vApp.
    2. Set CPU and Memory allocation values.
    3. Set a Quota on vApp virtual machines created within a vDC.
Note: For example if you had allocated 600GB of Memory at 20% allocation, the screen would display 30% of 1982.22GB assuming you had this type of configuration.  See the VMware vCloud Director Documentation for more information.
  5. Configure the Storage Allocation for the organization:
    1. Set the Storage limit value.
    2. Enable Thin Provisioning if appropriate.

  6. Select the Network Pool from the pull-down menu. The default is none.

The total available Networks in Network Pool displays.

Note: A warning displays if the network quota for this organization is higher than the number of networks available in the network pool.

  7. Identify the Org vDC in vCloud Director:
    1. Provide a name and description.
    2. Automatically Enabled is selected by default. If you disable the Org vDC prevents any more vApps being deployed or powered on.

Note: You must disable the Org vDC before you can delete it. To delete it, it must not contain any vApps.

  8. On the Ready to Complete screen, select Add Networks to this Organization after the wizard finishes to complete the Org vDC creation.

At this point your cloud organization has the resources needed (apart from network) to start deploying vApps/virtual machines.
