vSphere Client displays a white screen when accessing the virtual machine console (1026153)

  • 117 Ratings

You may observe these symptoms after installing VMware vSphere Client 4.1 or vSphere Client 5.x :

  • You see a blank white screen when opening the virtual machine console for a virtual machine running on an ESXi/ESX 3.x host
  • No errors are reported on the VMware vSphere Client
  • Virtual machine consoles to ESXi/ESX 4.0, 4.1 or 5.x virtual machines open without any issues

This issue occurs due to compatibility issues between VMware Virtual Infrastructure (VI) Client 2.5 and Windows 7.

This issue occurs if the VMware vSphere Client is installed on a 64-bit Windows 7 operating system or if the VI Client is installed after installing the vSphere Client.
To work around this issue:
  1. Uninstall all installed client versions including VI Client 2.5, vSphere Client 4.0, and vSphere Client 4.1.
  2. Re-install client versions in this order: VI Client 2.5 Update 6, vSphere Client 4.0 Update 2, and vSphere Client 4.1. To download the clients, download the appropriate version of vCenter Server from the VMware Download Center.
If the issue persists:
  1. Make a copy of the Launcher directory in the Virtual Infrastructure Client directory ( %ProgramFiles%\VMware\Infrastructure\Virtual Infrastructure Client\Launcher).
  2. Copy the directory to another location and rename it (for example, Launcher OLD).
  3. Install vSphere Client 4.1.
  4. Copy the renamed Launcher directory back to the Virtual Infrastructure Client directory, so you have, for example, a Launcher directory and a Launcher OLD directory.
  5. When connecting to:

    • 3.5 Clients, use the VPXClient.exe file in the Launcher OLD directory (356kb)
    • 4.1 Clients, use the VPXClient.exe file in the Launcher directory (367kb)

Note: You can create separate shortcuts to both and run them depending on the ESXi/ESX hosts to which you are connecting.

  6. If this issue persists, contact VMware Support and open a Support Request. For more information, see Filing a Support Request in My VMware (2006985).

Additional Information

This issue may occur in all operating systems including, but not restricted to, Windows 7. For more information, see the VMware Infrastructure Compatibility Matrixes.
