  • Upgrading VMware Tools on an ESX or ESXi 4.0 Update 1 host fails
  • You see the error:

Error 1316: A network error occurred while attempting to read the file

This issue can occur if the previous installation of VMware Tools was done through a local disk or remote disk and not through the CD-ROM drive.

To work around this issue, you can remove and re-install VMware Tools. However, your network settings are lost when you re-install VMware Tools.

To resolve this issue, you must rename the SourceList PackageName and LastUsedSource registry entries with the old names.

To rename the registry entries:

  1. In the virtual machine, click Start > Run, type regedit, and click OK. The Registry Editor window opens.
  2. Take a full backup of the registry. Do not skip this step.
  3. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Products\xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx\SourceList, where xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx is the 32 Hex character associated with the VMware Tools install.
  4. Select SourceList and change PackageName to VMware Tools.msi and LastUsedSource to n;1;d:, where d: is the CD-ROM Drive of the virtual machine.
