I/O Statistics in vSphere 4.1 (1021953)

  • 6 Ratings

This article provides information about I/O statistics in vSphere 4.1.

New functionality in ESX/ESXi 4.1 provides additional data to monitor and analyze storage workloads for optimum performance. ESX and ESXi 4.1 have new NFS statistics exposed in esxtop and new host and virtual storage statistics (real-time and historical) available in vCenter and public APIs.

This table outlines the statistics introduced in 4.1:
Inventory Object Per Component Statistic FC/NFS/iSCSI vCenter? esxtop?
Host Datastore Throughput, latency All Yes Yes
Storage Adapter Throughput, latency FC Yes Available prior to ESX 4.1
Storage Path Throughput, latency FC Yes Available prior to ESX 4.1
Physical disk Throughput, latency FC, iSCSI Available prior to ESX 4.1 Available prior to ESX 4.1
Virtual machine Datastore Throughput, latency All Yes Yes
VMDK Throughput, latency All Yes Yes
As all of these statistics are available through the vSphere Client, so you do not need to use esxtop or resxtop. However, if you want to use these commands, you can find out more information in Performance Monitoring Utilities: resxtop and esxtop in the vSphere Resource Management Guide.

Additional Information

To display NFS statistics, change the display based on disk device by running esxtop then pressing u.
