Purpose

This article describes typical vCenter Server and vCenter Update Manager deployment models. It also identifies the environment that best suits each model.

Resolution

This table lists the most common vCenter Server and vCenter Update Manager server host deployment models and describes the recommended environment for each model:
 
Deployment model Recommended Environment

vCenter Server and vCenter Update Manager server are installed on one host and their database instances are on the same host.

This model, sometimes referred to as "all-in-one" system, is most reliable when your environment is relatively small (up to 20 hosts or 200 virtual machines).
vCenter Server and vCenter Update Manager server are installed on one host and their database instances are on two separate hosts. This model is recommended for medium deployments, with more than 30 hosts or 300 virtual machines.
vCenter Server and vCenter Update Manager server run on different hosts and their database instances are on two separate hosts.
This model is recommended for large deployments when the environment contains more than 100 hosts or 1,000 virtual machines.
