Unable to run esxupdate update command after removing a bulletin that has hostd VIB (1016402)

  • 1 Ratings

The esxupdate remove command is designed to remove extensions that are added after the initial install, but not for removing ESX patch and update bulletins. The remove command does not roll back patches, but rather completely removes VIB packages from the system.

If you have already removed the ESX update or patch VIBs, you should re-install those VIBs by running the esxupdate update command. However, if you have removed the hostd RPM, you cannot run the esxupdate update command.

This issue is resolved in ESX 4.0 Update 2. For prior releases, see the following task.
To reinstall the hostd RPM if you have already removed the hostd RPM:
  1. Run the esxupdate -m metadata -b <bulletin_that_contains_hostd_RPM> stage command in the ESX server using SSH.
  2. Change the directory to the extracted cache directory by running the following command:
    cd <rpm extracted cache dir> (/var/cache/esxupdate/rpm_vmware-hostd-esx_xxx/)
  3. Install hostd.rpm by running the following RPM command:
    rpm -Uvh <vmware-hostd-esx-xxx.rpm>
  4. Reinstall the bulletin by running the following command:
    esxupdate -m metadata -b <bulletin name> update
