  • 55 Ratings

This article describes issues when trying to use USB devices in virtual machines.

USB devices are currently not supported for ESX 4.0 and below. If a software that is intended for use in the virtual machine requires a dongle, it may be possible to use a parallel port device instead. Check with your software vendor about this possibility.
Note: ESX 4.1 does support USB controllers. For more information, see USB support for ESX/ESXi 4.1 (1022290) .
Third party USB solutions are available, using IP, but they have not been tested by VMware. You can find information about the solutions other customers have used in the VMTN Discussion Forum ( ) by searching the query USB in the VMware ESX Server Setup and Troubleshooting forum.
Note: Digi International has developed AnywhereUSB Remote I/O Concentrator, which utilizes USB over IP Technology, to work with VMware. For more information, see . For support related to configuring this, contact .
